Celebrating Kwanzaa 2022! Day 2: Kujichagulia

Kwanzaa Day 2!

Learn about the second principal of Kwanzaa: Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) with Dr. Francine Oputa:

Today's principle is “Kujichagulia” which means self-determination.

On this day we would like to center our focus on the importance of ourselves as individuals and how the self impacts our community. Think about how portions of the self could be a reflection of the ancestors. The Black community comes from a line of doctors, healers, writers, musicians, engineers, etc.

So with that knowledge what do you think you could have inherited ?

On this day it is important to look inward and ask “who am I?” What gives me purpose? What drives my creativity? How would I define myself?. It is easy to allow the environment to shape your image, to let outside influences dictate how you may view yourself, but it is important to see your reflection through an untampered mirror. It is important to write your own narrative which can be written with our ancestors' in mind.

Today, practice being mindful about the choices you make and how those choices may affect your future. Think long and hard about the knowledge your ancestors brought to the table and how you can utilize it for a purposeful future.
