Celebrating Kwanzaa 2022! Day 3: Ujima

Kwanzaa Day 3!

Learn about the third principal of Kwanzaa: Ujima (Unity) with Dr. Francine Oputa:

Today’s principle is Ujima which means “unity” in Swahili.

Yesterday we did some self-reflection but today we should use that reflection as a tool to understand how we can impact our community as a whole. Unity has been one of the strongest principles in the Black community, we have practiced collectivism since ancient civilization took place thousands of years ago. Our striving to remain one has helped us achieve our biggest goals and overcome our largest obstacles.

It is important to think about what our community would look like if we all worked as one, stood within our morals, used our gifts and talents to create a better world, and helped each other climb the ladder to success. It is important that we stand, not only for each other, but with each other.

Let us reflect on the things that unity has helped us achieve like the freedom to make choices, to be unapologetically ourselves, to create, to aspire, to learn without fear, and to continue to move towards social advancement.

Remember strength of one man is challenging but the strength of a million men is impossible to beat.
